Settle is perhaps best known for the Settle to Carlisle railway, which crosses the most rugged dales lands, a major feature of which is the Ribble Head Viaduct. This is a real train journey - by steam train. Settle affords a comfortable point from which to explore Malham, with its cove and tarn, and from which to plan your route over the Three Peaks of Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. You'll need a drink and something to eat after that, and Settle is a useful place in which to take sustenance - good Yorkshire beer from neighbouring Skipton and Keithley combined with a traditional Yorkshire Pudding. Things don't get much better than this. |
