Places to Visit

Richmond

Richmond stands in a commanding position over the river Swale. It has a large market square and markets are held each Saturday. It is a town bursting with activity yet it still retains a typical Yorkshire charm.

I suggest that you devote some time to look into the Swale - its bed is filled with smooth stones made round by the play of time. It's a nice place to stand and skim stones into the water - see how many times they bounce, and if you beat seven drop me a line.

The castle is set on high ground, close to the river. It reminds us of the history and inheritance of the town.

Heading back toward the market square there are steep, narrow cobbled streets, shops and an abundance of Yorkshire tea rooms. Richmond's position in Swaledale is spectacular, and once seen never forgotten.
