Places to Visit

Aysgarth

Aysgarth is a small village built of local Yorkshire stone and is a good base for exploring Wenselydale. There is a small tea room, several guest houses and the The George and Dragon pub in the village. The river Ure runs to the north and there are pleasant walks along it.

Getting to Aysgarth

Aysgarth is easily reached on the A684 Leyburn to Sedbergh road.
Buses from Hawes and Bedale stop here and Dalesbus also provides some bus links.

Aysgarth is most famous for its Falls - a picturesque range of shallow water falls on the river Ure, Wensleydale. Aysgarth Falls are a few miles further to the east. There is a hotel, The Aysgarth Falls Hotel, where a small lane down a rather steep bank takes you to a bridge over the Ure and the Aysgarth Falls. Cross the bridge and continue on to the National Park Visitor Centre where there is parking and a path down to the Falls.

The walks along the river at Aysgarth are lovely and children paddle in the shallows and play with their fishing nets on fine, sunny days. It's a place where families come into the countryside to enjoy the natural beauty, and have fun.

By the bridge is a mill, The Falls, which has been converted into a tea room with a museum of horse-drawn vehicles and a gift shop. Behind the mill you can walk up to St Andrew's church which has a lovely view over the area.

Walks in the area

The Falls are in three sections, upper, middle and lower, which stretch for about a mile along this section of the Ure. There are lovely walks along the Ure and for a longer walk you can spend the day walking to nearby Bolton Castle and back taking in part of the dismantled Wensleydale railway track.
